The anticipation surrounding the recent awards show has been intense, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio clarified that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This distinction implies that the team might be designing a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it kicked off the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, player agency, and deep class systems—elements that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of specialized paths that are viable with a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.
The series is also famously flexible, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be completed in diverse methods, frequently in surprising fashion.
- You might progress the story because you recalled something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can look forward to more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
